Features

Touchscreen

The major selling point of the HP 15T Touch is the touchscreen from which it takes its name. This touchscreen allows the laptop to be operated as a tablet if the user desires so, giving them the best of both worlds. Throughout our testing, the touchscreen proved to be pretty responsive and actually exceeded our expectations in a number of areas.

It is particularly useful when it comes to browsing the internet, as it allows you to open and close web pages in just seconds, eliminating the need for finding and dragging the cursor across the screen, which also makes it easier to watch and pause videos.

Of course, the low price of the HP 15T Touch means the touchscreen isn’t going to triumph in every area and, as we expected, it came up short when we opened MS Paint, which requires the user to drag their finger across the screen to create an image.

While the touchscreen was perfectly adequate when it came to drawing slowly, it wasn’t able to register faster movements of the finger or sudden changes in direction.

Integrated DVD Player

The majority of 2-in-1 laptops come equipped with a keyboard which can be moved and manipulated in a number of different directions, with many more expensive models boasting a full 360º convert hinge.

The HP 15T Touch, however, is not one such model. While the keyboard of this 2-in-1 laptop cannot be bent into tent or tablet mode is certainly a drawback in many ways, it can also be an undeniable plus.

For example, the rigidness of the gadget’s keyboard meant HP was able to fit the 15T Touch with an integrated DVD player, something which is missing from an increasing number of modern laptops and is almost impossible to find on a 2-in-1 model. With this DVD player, your viewing will no longer be limited to Netflix and those shady illegal streaming sites.

Multiple Ports

A lot of people avoid using tablets because their limited number of ports leads to a limited number of uses and makes it frustratingly complicated to transfer files between two devices. As a 2-in-1 laptop, the HP 15T Touch features a number of ports intended to enhance the experience of the user.

Some of these ports include an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The final of those three ports is particularly advantageous, as more and more single-purpose tablets are deciding to eliminate their headphone jacks in an attempt to force users to purchase branded wireless headphones.

With the HP 15T Touch you can rest easy knowing any set of headphones you attempt to pair it with will be compatible.

Pre-Installed Apps

The HP 15T Touch is often recommended to those who would like to own a 2-in-1 laptop but aren’t exactly technologically-inclined. If you are purchasing a 2-in-1 laptop as a gift for an older person and expect them to experience difficulty filling it with apps they will enjoy, you should note the HP 15T Touch comes with a number of pre-installed apps, which simplifies and expedites the setup process.

It is important to point out, however, accompanying the useful pre-installed apps are a number of less impressive ones. For whatever reason, the folks on the HP design team deemed it necessary to load the 15T Touch up with bloatware, which hinders its performance.

Long Battery Life

Much of the popularity of laptops and tablets can be traced back to their portability and many of the people who purchase them do so with the intention of using them to complete their work while they are on buses, in coffee shops, and on planes.

For this reason, laptops and tablets are generally expected to have a decent battery life. Obviously, the same is expected of 2-in-1 laptops, which is why HP made sure to fit its 15T Touch with a long-lasting lithium battery.

On a single full charge, the 15T Touch can last an average of six hours. As you likely already know if you have researched other 2-in-1 laptops prior to the 15T Touch, a six-hour battery life is actually shorter than the battery life of a more expensive model, but it is impressive nonetheless.

Conclusion

If you are a professional searching for a 2-in-1 laptop you can rely on both in the office and while on the road for business trips, you should probably resign yourself to spending a little extra and go with a $1,000 model. This is also the case if you are a dedicated gamer searching for the 2-in-1 laptop which is going to allow you to enjoy your game as its developer intended it to be enjoyed.

If you are a casual consumer, however, and require a 2-in-1 laptop for simply browsing the internet, enjoying your favorite movies, and Skyping, you should definitely consider the HP 15T Touch.

While its bloatware and lack of a 360º convert hinge are certainly faults which HP should tackle on future models, they are minor issues and are overshadowed by the surprisingly copious pros of the 2-in-1 laptop and its quaint but eternally useful 3.5mm headphone jack and integrated DVD player.

Lenovo ThinkPad T480p - Best Laptop for Work

Lenovo ThinkPad T480 - If the 2-in-1 laptop you choose is going to become a staple of your work arsenal, be sure to go with a model primarily intended for professional settings. Take Lenovo, for example. 2-in-1 laptops in the brand’s ThinkPad T series are often chosen by professionals as they can run full versions of Microsoft Office and other similar software and applications.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480p is particularly popular in offices owing to its Solid-State Drive - which performs up to three times faster than its more common counterparts - its 12.5-hour battery life, and its Windows 10 Pro operating system.

One thing to note about the Lenovo ThinkPad T480p, and, indeed, the majority of ThinkPads, is their cost, so be sure to consult your budget before making a purchase. Masses of Lenovo product owners, myself included, swear by their Thinkpads and, unlike other popular and expensive brands, will easily last you five years or more with minimal maintenance and upkeep. A Lenovo product is an investment, for sure, but often delivers a strong ROI over time.

Want the beast of all 2-in-1 laptops? Check out my Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga, which I take around the world. All my Apple friends are constantly plugged in and looking for outlets, while I can sit at the beach for almost 4 hours uplugged, enjoying my 1 TB of Solid State Hard Drive and 16 GB Ram. My last Thinkpad lasted 5 years and was in perfect condition when I got this new one. The only reason I splurged on a new one was because I didn't want to jet set the world for a year or more with a 5 year old laptop.

Acer Aspire R15 - Best for Gamers

Acer Aspire R15 - Gamers tend to look down on tablets and 2-in-1 laptops as they believe such devices lack the speed and clarity necessary for them to fully experience their games. While it is true the majority of 2-in-1 laptops are not cut out for use by dedicated gamers, there are a number of models which were designed with gamers in mind, one of the most popular being the Aspire R15 from Acer.

The Acer Aspire R15 boasts NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics for an immersive gaming experience no matter where you are. It also promises superior audio quality, which is made possible by its dual built-in speakers and internal subwoofer.

Dell Inspiron 13 5000 - Best for Streaming and Entertainment

Dell Inspiron 13 5000 - In many ways, the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 is the middle ground between a 2-in-1 laptop which was intended for business and a 2-in-1 laptop which was intended for leisure. The backlit keyboard allows the user to tackle essays and reports, although some have reported its keys being a little too stiff for it to be of much use when taking on anything that extends beyond a couple thousand words.

Its 1920 x 1080 screen may not make for the most authentic gaming experience, but it does allow the user to stream their favorite movies and television shows with vivid colors and near-perfect clarity. This is arguably the ideal 2-in-1 laptop for those who aren’t particularly enthusiastic about technology and are simply searching for a sturdy laptop which they can rely on to perform rudimentary tasks on the road and in the office.
