Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2 in 1 13.3 Inch Full HD Touchscreen

The success of the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2 in 1 13.3 Inch Full HD Touchscreen can be attributed to a number of things, including its swivel display, integrated camera, and a selection of multiple ports. Included is an HD webcam for those Skype video calls and an impressive battery life. Dell was once among the top manufacturers of computers in the world, but took a bit of a backseat following the rise of the iPad and the smartphone. Today, however, it seems Dell is on its way back to its former glory.

Swivel Display

The Inspiron 13 5000 boasts a high-quality convert hinge, which gives it a superior swivel display. The keyboard can be set to a number of different positions, each suited to a different series of tasks. Obviously, the most popular settings are laptop mode and tablet mode, but those who are trying to watch a movie or read a recipe without a whole lot of room will certainly appreciate the tent mode.

It should be pointed out some Dell customers have reported the hinge creaking when this ultrabook is being changed from one mode to another. Thankfully, this is purely an aural issue and has not proven to be an indicator of a deeper problem.

Backlit Keyboard

The Dell Inspiron 13 5000 comes fitted with a backlit keyboard, which may seem like a minor feature at first, but is actually quite useful. Because the keys of a backlit keyboard are illuminated, you’ll be able to type on the Inspiron 13 5000 in the darkness just as effectively as you would in brighter conditions. This means you won’t have to worry about work going undone even in a power outage or when traveling in the evening.

Generally speaking, backlit keyboards are preferred by gamers over their more traditional alternatives. This is because a backlit keyboard allows the user to observe and navigate their controls in the darkness, eliminating the need for artificial lighting, which often makes it difficult to see the screen and enjoy the graphics of any given game to their fullest.

The one flaw of the keyboard of the Inspiron 13 5000 is its keys have been reported to be a little stiff. This won’t be much of an issue when composing the average school or college essay, but it will likely become a source of frustration when working on projects with a larger word count.

HD Camera

While we went into testing this 2-in-1 laptop aware that Dell had supposedly fitted it with an HD camera, we were pleasantly surprised by just how clear the images shot with this camera can be.

Pictures and videos captured by built-in webcams generally aren’t the greatest, but the webcam of the Inspiron 13 5000 returns images which could be mistaken for images captured using a smartphone or more traditional tablet, and works in conjunction with an integrated microphone for crystal clear audio.

The high quality of this ultrabook’s camera means it is not just suited to making and taking Skype calls with family and clients, but also to recording videos and vlogs. Of the many 2-in-1 laptops available right now, this is the model we would recommend to YouTubers who are trying to produce content without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on specialist equipment.

Multiple Ports

One of the major flaws of the common tablet is a lack of ports. The average iPad, for example, features only a lightning connector (Apple’s buzzword for a charging port) and a 3.5mm audio jack, the latter of which is gradually being phased out. This lack of input and output ports is one of the primary reasons many laptop users have been reluctant to convert to tablets.

If you are one such skeptical laptop user, you’ll no doubt be pleased to learn the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 features a selection of ports, many of which are often reserved for more traditional laptops. Among the many ports boasted by the Inspiron 13 5000, you will find an SD card reader, a 3.5mm audio jack, and even a Noble lock slot. The gadget also comes fitted with the customary USB 2.0 port.

Long Battery Life

On a single full charge, the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 has been observed to last a little over seven hours, occasionally verging on eight. While this certainly isn’t the most impressive battery life that has ever been reported, it is noteworthy in the world of 2-in-1 laptops, as many often offer only five or six hours of battery life following a full charge.

It should also be pointed out the seven-hour battery life of the 13 5000 is based on seven straight hours of streaming videos and browsing the internet, so you can expect it to last significantly longer if your focus is writing an essay or putting together a spreadsheet.

The criticism most commonly made by Dell’s detractors is the brand’s products can often be a little uninteresting to look at and the criticism can certainly be applied to the Inspiron 13 5000. Available in a single grey color, this 2-in-1 laptop certainly doesn’t look like a gadget which is going to inspire creativity or spontaneity.

To a degree, this dullness extends to the Inspiron 13 5000’s display, which may appear a little dim and will make certain videos and games less impressive than they would be when run on a model with more vivid colors.

That being said, the swivel display, responsive touchscreen, and multiple ports of the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 – coupled with its comparatively low price – make this one of the finest 2-in-1 laptops for the general consumer with no desires beyond browsing the internet, watching Netflix, and completing the occasional assignment.

Lenovo ThinkPad T480p - Best Laptop for Work

Lenovo ThinkPad T480 - If the 2-in-1 laptop you choose is going to become a staple of your work arsenal, be sure to go with a model primarily intended for professional settings. Take Lenovo, for example. 2-in-1 laptops in the brand’s ThinkPad T series are often chosen by professionals as they can run full versions of Microsoft Office and other similar software and applications.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T480p is particularly popular in offices owing to its Solid-State Drive - which performs up to three times faster than its more common counterparts - its 12.5-hour battery life, and its Windows 10 Pro operating system.

One thing to note about the Lenovo ThinkPad T480p, and, indeed, the majority of ThinkPads, is their cost, so be sure to consult your budget before making a purchase. Masses of Lenovo product owners, myself included, swear by their Thinkpads and, unlike other popular and expensive brands, will easily last you five years or more with minimal maintenance and upkeep. A Lenovo product is an investment, for sure, but often delivers a strong ROI over time.

Want the beast of all 2-in-1 laptops? Check out my Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Yoga, which I take around the world. All my Apple friends are constantly plugged in and looking for outlets, while I can sit at the beach for almost 4 hours uplugged, enjoying my 1 TB of Solid State Hard Drive and 16 GB Ram. My last Thinkpad lasted 5 years and was in perfect condition when I got this new one. The only reason I splurged on a new one was because I didn't want to jet set the world for a year or more with a 5 year old laptop.

Acer Aspire R15 - Best for Gamers

Acer Aspire R15 - Gamers tend to look down on tablets and 2-in-1 laptops as they believe such devices lack the speed and clarity necessary for them to fully experience their games. While it is true the majority of 2-in-1 laptops are not cut out for use by dedicated gamers, there are a number of models which were designed with gamers in mind, one of the most popular being the Aspire R15 from Acer.

The Acer Aspire R15 boasts NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics for an immersive gaming experience no matter where you are. It also promises superior audio quality, which is made possible by its dual built-in speakers and internal subwoofer.

Dell Inspiron 13 5000 - Best for Streaming and Entertainment

Dell Inspiron 13 5000 - In many ways, the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 is the middle ground between a 2-in-1 laptop which was intended for business and a 2-in-1 laptop which was intended for leisure. The backlit keyboard allows the user to tackle essays and reports, although some have reported its keys being a little too stiff for it to be of much use when taking on anything that extends beyond a couple thousand words.

Its 1920 x 1080 screen may not make for the most authentic gaming experience, but it does allow the user to stream their favorite movies and television shows with vivid colors and near-perfect clarity. This is arguably the ideal 2-in-1 laptop for those who aren’t particularly enthusiastic about technology and are simply searching for a sturdy laptop which they can rely on to perform rudimentary tasks on the road and in the office.

HP 15.6 Inch HD Touchscreen Laptop - Best for Affordability

HP 15.6 Inch HD Touchscreen Laptop - Give some consideration to the HP 15T Touch, if you’re looking for a 2-in-1 laptop but don’t have the budget to purchase something like the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 or the Acer Aspire R15. The HP 15T Touch is a touchscreen laptop which can be purchased for less than $500, arguably making it the perfect introduction to 2-in-1 laptops.

Despite its low price tag, the 15T Touch boosts many of the features one would expect to find on its more expensive alternatives, such as a responsive touchscreen, a wide array of pre-installed apps, and a selection of ports.
