ASUS C302CA-DHM4 Chromebook Flip Laptop

ASUS C302CA-DHM4 Chromebook Flip Laptop

Summary

Key Features of the ASUS C302CA-DHM4 Chromebook Flip Laptop include: Intel Core Processor with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM, flexible hinge for use as tablet or laptop, bright backlit illuminated keyboard, lightweight 2.65 pounds, sleek aluminum metal body, long battery life rated up to 10 hours

Memory

In the intro, we mentioned terabytes of memory and how sometimes the amount is not always necessary, and with just 64 GB of hard drive space, that will need be the case. It will be fine for storing documents and plenty of music tracks, but if you love hoarding movies then you are going to have to be selective.

There is the option to expand the local storage up to 512 GB with the use of a micro SD card, which is going to more cost effective than paying more for a laptop with a higher capacity hard drive.

The 4Gb of RAM is certainly enough to allow the laptop to run smoothly and with no noticeable delays or reluctance to open multiple programs websites or files.

Processor

The main processor is an Intel Core m3-6Y30 which is faster and more responsive than the Celeron processor which you would normally find in this type of laptop. It also incorporates Intel’s 515 HD graphics card, and this combination allowed us to stream at least three videos simultaneously and open several browser tabs without any problems.

Display

This Chromebook has a 12.5-inch touchscreen display, which produces very impressive images. It is quick to react when you are using the touchscreen, and if more than one person is looking at the screen, it has excellent wide-viewing angles.

Battery Life

If you thought paying less, means a lot less battery life, then think again. The battery lasted for well over 10 hours, which some of the top laptops can just about muster. This included watching movies, surfing for several hours, and playing a couple of games, so it should last a normal day’s activity.

Other Features

With the word ‘flip’ in its name, you might have already realized this laptop is flexible in more ways than one. It has a 360° hinge which means you can have it sitting up just like a tablet or a tent configuration which hides the keyboard and allows you to use the touchscreen.

The body is made from light aluminum which might explain why it weighs only 2.65 lbs. making it perfect for carrying with you to work, school, or college.

The keyboard is backlit and utilizes a back assembly with 1.4 mm of key travel so when you are typing it feels natural and more comfortable.

Pros ASUS C302CA-DHM4 Chromebook Flip Laptop

  • Excellent wide-angle view
  • 360° hinge allows you to ‘flip’ screen
  • Touchscreen display
  • Fast and responsive processor
  • Comfortable keyboard for typing

HP EliteBook Revolve Laptop

Summary

The HP EliteBook Revolve Flagship Laptop includes a 128 GB SSD hard drive, Intel Core i5-5200U Processor 2.20GHz , 4GB RAM, Windows 10 Pro, backlit keyboard and 11.5 inch screen.,

Memory

This HP laptop offers you a 128 GB SSD hard drive which will be more than adequate for those who do not intend loading up their laptop with lots of huge files, and every movie they have ever watched.

The increasing use of cloud services to store files means the need for huge hard drive capacity is not as pressing as it was a few years ago, so 128 GB may be enough for many of you.

The RAM is 4GB which allows for multiple pages, files, and apps to be open, and it still copes with downloads or uploads at the same time.

Processor

With the processor effectively determining how quickly your laptop operates then having an Intel i5-5200 2.2 GHz processor in this laptop bodes well for fast reactions, and immediate responses. It enables documents to be opened without delay, streaming services to run with the minimum of buffering, and multi-tasking such as several browser tabs open when researching, for example.

Display

While the screen size at 11.5 inches is smaller than many others in this category, the display certainly does not lack clarity or vivid colors. It is a touchscreen display which incorporates 10-finger tracking for the best experience when using this feature.

The resolution is 1366 by 768 which will provide a sufficiently clear screen for most uses, although bear in mind this is not designed as a gaming machine, so if you are looking for the stunning graphics you get from an Xbox or PS4 then you are going to be disappointed.

Battery Life

While we always hope to get 10 hours from a battery, for this laptop the limit is around 8 hours, which is still more than acceptable. It should certainly be plenty for normal day-to-day use, even if you are connected to the internet for long periods of time.

Other Features

The display has a rotating hinge which allows you to position it in virtually any direction you want so it’s the most comfortable and practical for you.

It is constructed from a magnesium alloy which gives it durability combined with a very stylish and modern look too. Its dimensions are 11.2 x 8.4 x 0.9 inches deep, so it is obviously very portable.

Pros HP EliteBook Revolve Laptop

  • Strong but sleek design
  • 128 GB SSD drive
  • Screen can be rotated
  • 10-finger tracking touchscreen
  • Responsive Intel i5 processor

Cons HP EliteBook Revolve Laptop

  • No Bluetooth connectivity
  • Audio lacks bass

Dell 2018 Inspiron 15 HD Touchscreen Laptop

Summary

The Dell 2018 Inspiron 15 HD Touchscreen Laptop has a 256 SDD, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, AMD A6-9200 Dual Core processor rated up to 2.8GHz, 15.5 inch screen, 5 hour plus battery life and plenty of connection ports.

Memory

The Dell has by far the largest capacity of the three laptops with a 256 SDD and 1TB HDD. This puts it in a different league when it comes to number and size of files you can store on it. 1 TB HDD is more than some cheap PCs will offer you, and 256 SSD competes well with many more expensive laptops.

The RAM is also impressive, at 8 GB. Again, very respectable for a lot of laptops, but for one costing less than $500 it is exceptional.

Processor

Of the three laptops under $500 we are reviewing, this is the only one which does not use an Intel processor. Instead, it has an AMD A6-9200 Dual Core processor which is rated up to 2.8GHz. This is a very highly rated processor and is a very cost-effective alternative to the Intel i5.

It is integrated with the graphics processing so when you are streaming movies or playing games everything runs without lag or pauses.

Display

Dell’s reputation for stunning graphics and displays is somewhat diminished by the display on this laptop. It is good, but not great by their standards. Normal viewing of documents web pages and movies is fine but when it needed to step up for gaming, the level of clarity and color seemed somewhat lacking.

This might be down to the fact that the screen is bigger than most at 15.5 inches, so if you like a screen that is closer to the size of your PC monitor then you will like this one.

Battery Life

As with the display, we were disappointed with the battery life which ran for just over 5 hours. This may be enough for most people who are not on their laptop all day, and who might take the charger lead with them anyway. If this is you, then the battery life is not an issue, and for others, bear in mind 5 hours is still the equivalent of watching two full-length movies.

Other Features

The sound quality from Dell’s ‘MaxxAudio’ sound technology and speakers was exceptional. When watching a movie, the clarity was superb, and it was no less impressive when listening to both music and spoken voice audios.

The Inspiron is also well endowed with connectivity ports. It has three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI connection, Ethernet port, and a headphone jack.

Pros Dell 2018 Inspiron 15 HD Touchscreen Laptop

  • Plenty of connection ports
  • Superb sound quality
  • 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SDD
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • Touchscreen display

Cons Dell 2018 Inspiron 15 HD Touchscreen Laptop

  • Battery life disappointing
  • Display clarity not great

Conclusion Best Touch Screen Laptops Under $500

It would be a tough call to say which of these touchscreen laptops under $500 would earn the spot as the top one, as they each have different merits which will appeal to potential users.

The ASUS Chromebook Flip does lack both RAM and hard drive memory, but unless you’re a file collector, this may not be an issue for you. You may well not need all that memory and with its multi-position flip screen, this makes it a very easy laptop to use which may be your overriding need.

With the HP EliteBook, we have a faster processor and a bigger hard drive, which will appeal, but the sound quality is not great.

Finally, we have the Dell Inspiron, which is head and shoulders above the other two in terms of both RAM and hard drive memory, and these would give some PCs a run for their money. On the flip side the battery life and display let it down a little, but overall, the high specifications of the Dell Inspiron just give it the edge.
